A proctoscope is a rigid instrument (tube) used to examine the anal canal and lower rectum.

The “small” size refers to a narrower/smaller diameter and often shorter length, used especially when anatomy requires it (children, discomfort, narrow canal, etc.

A small proctoscope usually has these components:

• Stainless steel (reusable type) — durable, autoclavable, good optics when polished.

• Brass (older models) often with nickel or chrome plating — less common now.

• Plastic / Polystyrene / Transparent medical‑grade plastic — often disposable to reduce risk ofinfection.

• Materials are generally latex‑free (especially disposable/private use) to avoid allergies.

• Indications (When To Use a Small Proctoscope) A small proctoscope is used in situations like: Anal canal / rectum examination for bleeding, pain, discharge, pruritus (itching). Diagnosis of hemorrhoids, fissures, polyps, proctitis or other lesions near the lower rectum. Taking biopsies of small lesions in the anal canal or lower rectum.   Follow‑up or screening in cases where a full‑size scope is uncomfortable or not needed. Paediatric patients, or in patients with stricter anal canal, in whom large scopes are painful/difficult.   Uses / How It’s Used Steps / uses: Preparation – patient positioning (usually Sims’/left lateral), lubrication of scope, ensuring light source ready. Digital Rectal Examination – to feel for obstruction, masses, etc., before using proctoscope. Insertion – with obturator in place, smooth rounded tip, sliding in slowly. Once in, remove obturator. Illumination & Inspection – view mucosa inside anal canal & lower rectum. Look for bleeding, lesions, ulcers, polyps, hemorrhoids. Intervention (if needed) – biopsy, excision of small polyps, cauterization, etc., can be done via small opening / with instruments through window. Withdrawal – inspect on way out; ensure no lesion missed; monitor for bleeding.
